Makes Sense of your Swim
Today I am proud to unveil the new Swimsense™ Performance Monitor. This small intuitive device is worn around the wrist while swimming. Using motion sensing technology, the Swimsense (powered by SportSense™) automatically detects and records the number of laps swum, total distance, calories burned, lap time, pace, and stroke count. With built-in automatic stroke recognition, Swimsense is the first Performance Monitor in the world that can automatically differentiate between backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle. Custom settings allow the user to configure Swimsense for unique pool sizes, and personalize calorie calculations by specifying gender, weight and age.
The Swimsense Performance Monitor is effortless for fitness enthusiasts and recreational swimmers to use, yet records the detailed training data that elite swimmers and triathletes demand.
Probably the best part of the Swimsense is being able to review the swim data on your computer. With a free online workout viewer, you can upload your workouts via a USB connection to review up to 14 past workouts/swims for easy progress monitoring. We will also offer a subscription Training Log so you can track goals, create workout plans, and store an unlimited number of past workouts for performance analysis. The Training Log is fully upgradable with automatic software updates for the Swimsense watch.
Swimsense will be available this 2010 holiday season for $199.99. For more information about the device or to receive updates about its release, please visit www.FINISinc.com/Swimsense.

Which month is meant with holiday 2010 in the US?
We are targeting having initial sales in October-December of this year, so that the Swimsense may be available for the US holiday season. Stay tuned to our website as we will let everyone know when it is in-stock!
Will the Swimsense work in Open Water Or in an Endless Pool?
The Swimsense will certainly work in open water and in an Endless Pool, but probably not in the way you are seeking. The device will only calculate an accurate stroke count. All other metrics (distance, pace, etc.) would be inaccurate and probably not very useful. The device relies on you turning and changing directions in a pool in order to calculate proper distance, splits, and rates.
I know I’m VERY late commenting on this topic, but I couldn’t resist. And I couldn’t find a better place to make the comment… I’ll keep looking.
Too bad it won’t work in open water or endless pools, kind of like a pedometer. It seems that a user could calibrate in a standard pool with their various swim strokes and then it could be used in an open water environment… maybe??? Just a thought! I would definitely get one, if it would do that, even if it wasn’t totally accurate a close estimate would be MOST helpful! Trying to guess in my Endless Pool or when swimming at that lake is difficult at best.
Thanks!
Stan,
We are looking at creating an open-water mode for the Swimsense, but it is a difficult problem to solve. Getting a stroke rate and accurate of strokes should be possible, but trying to calibrate distance could be way off. It’s hard to extrapolate between pool and open water swimming because of walls, currents, weather, etc.
We should have something eventually, and because the watch is firmware update-able, then a watch bought today will be compatible with future features and functions as well.

Like Mark says above I would value the data in the open water even with the flaws. Keep working on this feature!
